Diaper Bank
The Diaper Bank is a partnership between the Department of Social Services and The Sharing Shelf.
It works with DSS, schools and community nonprofits to provide a week’s supply of diapers and wipes each month for infants and toddlers up to 36 months of age.
The Diaper Bank supports families with infants in 3 key ways:
- Diapers are provided to DSS offices for walk-in customers in emergencies and through DSS to customers at their local District Office;
- Individual caseworkers and nonprofit staff may apply to The Sharing Shelf each month on behalf of their clients or the infants/toddlers of their clients who are 36 months old or younger;
- The Sharing Shelf provides Wardrobe Packs (clothing packages).
Why the Diaper Bank Is Important
Studies show that nearly one in two American families struggles to afford clean diapers for their child.
Diapering a new baby can cost up to $120 per month, totaling approximately $1,440 per year. As a result, low-income families often lack an adequate supply of diapers. Babies are left in soiled diapers for too long, leading to diaper rash, infections, discomfort and emotional distress.
Donate Diapers
An ample supply of diapers is essential to the Diaper Bank’s success and sustainability.
The Diaper Bank relies on donations, community drives, and corporate sponsorships. The Sharing Shelf encourages individuals, community organizations and corporate sponsors to support the Diaper Bank and, ultimately, our families in the community.
